Prof. Lukman Olajide ABDUR-RAHMAN, is a Professor of Paediatric Surgery and Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at the University of Ilorin and University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Nigeria respectively. The current Head of Department of Surgery at both Institution and pioneer Coordinator of the Clinical Skills and Simulation Laboratory of the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ilorin

Introduction
The Department of Surgery, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin, came into existence at the inception of UITH, Ilorin in 1981. It was created as a composite department comprising General Surgery, Orthopaedic & Trauma, Radiology, Anaesthesia & ICU, ENT and Ophthalmology. Overtime, Radiology, Anaesthesia & ICU, ENT and Ophthalmology became departments on their own.
The department presently has 9 Divisions namely: General Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Thoracic & Cardiovascular surgery, Urological surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Neurosurgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopaedics & Trauma Surgery and the Accident & Emergency. There are at least 22 subspecialties in the department with 29 highly dedicated surgeons providing both academic and consultancy services to undergraduate and post graduate students and to patients.
We provide strong academic and skills training support for Undergraduate and Postgraduate students through the Clinical Skills and Simulation Laboratory of the College of Health Sciences which host various courses for: Medical and Nursing students, Medical Interns Clinical Skills, West African College of Surgeons Basic Surgical Skills Course and many other courses to other departments and units.
The residency training programme of the department took off immediately after creation of the with an initial intake of 4 residents. The department offers a 6-7 years residency training programme in the various subspecialties of General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, Paediatric Surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Plastic/Burns & Reconstructive Surgery. More than 70 Resident doctors have so far completed the Fellowship of both the West African College of Surgeons and National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FWACS/FMCS).
The graduates of the 2 Postgraduate Colleges function as Lecturer/Consultant Surgeons in their various subspecialties within and outside the country.
