Department of Medicine was one of the foundation departments when the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital was inaugurated in 1980. The department is involved in patients ‘care, training of resident doctors, research and community service through provision of education to the populace. The department offers specialized care in the key subspecialties of Internal Medicine through the outpatient clinics, inpatient and emergency services to her teaming clients. The department has six units namely Firm 1-Cardiology, Firm 2-Gastroenterology, Firm 3- Pulmonology, Firm 4- Nephrology, Firm 5- Neurology and Firm 6- Endocrine and Metabolism; Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics.

The department offers around the clock or 24 hour services ranging from outpatient consultation at the clinics, review of patient during ward rounds to specialized investigations.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

Cardiology Unit: this unit of the department provides services in the field of cardiovascular medicine. The unit in collaboration with Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgical units has had three surgical missions where patients with structural heart diseases were operated at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital between 2014 and 2017.  Currently, the unit offers treatment of heart diseases and preventive cardiology. Some of the services available include specialist consultations, electrocardiography, echocardiography, Holter electrocardiography and 24 hour blood pressure monitoring (AMBP). The unit has 4 consultants who anchor these programs. The unit has four specialist senior registrars and a rotating junior resident. The unit has cardiac catheterization laboratory which has not yet been equipped. When fully operational, this unit will take care of many of the structural heart diseases seen among our patients without undergoing open heart surgeries.

Gastroenterology Unit is saddled with the responsibility of caring for gastrointestinal diseases. The unit has two consultants but one of the two has been on leave of absence. The unit also has two specialist senior registrars. The unit provides upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopic services for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Dermatological services also run along this unit’s programs.

The Pulmonology Unit has two consultants with two specialist registrars. It provides services for patients with respiratory diseases which include spirometery, Gene Xpert testing for the diagnosis of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, care of patients with human immunodeficiency virus and pulmonary emergencies.

 The Nephrology Unit manages kidney diseases. The unit has two consultants with two specialist senior registrars. Currently, the unit has 4 dialysis machines for haemodialysis and had undertaken renal transplantation in 2012. The unit also offers renal biopsy, treatment of Sickle cell diseases patients and rheumatology cases.

Neurology Unit has three consultants and three specialist senior registrars. The unit has a stroke unit where cases of stroke are cared for with significant reduction of mortality. The unit also has electroencephalogram and electromyographic services for diagnosis and management of neurological diseases.

Endocrine Unit: the unit has the singular function of treating diabetes mellitus with other endocrine diseases. The unit has three consultants and also addresses the issue of adverse drug reactions, Pharmacovigilance and therapeutics.

Clinical services ranges from morning reviews, ward rounds, specialist clinics, specialized investigations and emergencies services. These activities are taken in turn according to the schedule of unit programs.

The department is headed by the Head who oversees the day to day running of departmental programs including academic activities. The consultants are assigned into various units according to their areas of specialization as listed above. Resident doctors are of two categories: specialist (senior) registrars who have passed Part 1 fellowship examination and junior residents. The consultants oversee and supervise the activities of the resident doctors. The units have house officers who have just graduated from medical schools and undergoing internship. The units receives clinical students of the University of Ilorin for their training.
