IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS

(1) CHECK LIST FOR SUBMISSION OF PROTOCOL.

  • Payment Teller.
  • Names and signatures of consultants/Lectures present during departmental review of protocol.
  • Consultants and externally funded/grant aided proposals are excluded.
  • Certificates of CITI on-line courses-GCP & RCR.
  • 5 binded copies of proposal.
  • CD of proposal.
  • Contents-Introduction, aims and objectives, justification, detailed methodology etc
  • Compliance with word limits (introduction, aims and methodology etc.
  • Complete Supervisors’ signatures.

(2)  ETHICS COURSE ON-LINE

  • Steps to follow to complete the course:
  • Go to www.citiprogram.org
  • Click”New Users Register Here”
  • Enter your chosen username and password
  • Click affiliate with another institution
  • Click the course by West African Bioethics Training Program (Listed under participating Institutions)
  • Select curriculum
    • Select Curriculum “West African Bioethics Training Programme”
    • Provide “Yes” answer to question
    • Tick group 1 (investigators) after checking the box
  • Are you conducting human subject research in Nigeria? If YES, you are required to complete the good clinical practice (GCP) and responsible conduct research (RCR).
  • Complete the course and evaluation and print out your certificate.

    (3) UNETHICAL CONDUCT IN HUMAN RESEARCH

A researcher would have been deemed to engage in an unethical conduct:

  • Where there is no respect of persons in terms of confidentiality and right of choice through informed consent
  • Where there is clear evidence that harm will be inflicted on the subject
  • Where there is apparent exploitation of vulnerable subjects such as children, pregnant women, prisoners etc
  • Where the methodology is flawed and unscientific.
  • Where there is conflict of interest evidenced by:
  1. A component or aspect of the study likely to make you judge in favour of someone/organization because they are known to you or have funded the research or given you gifts.
  2. Interest in the outcome of the study to the extent that it would accrue some benefits to you.
  3. You have induced or you have induced with gifts to produce a particular determined outcome.
  4. The subjects have been substantially remunerated beyond a reasonable point.
  • Where there is plagiarism as evidenced by;
  1. Intellectual idea theft i.e doing a research after obtaining the idea from reviewing similar study
  2. Lifting writings or phrases of another study without reference.
  3. Presenting another persons writings as your own
  4. Reproducing information previously published in another publication or journal thereby taking double credit for a single job (self-plagiarism)
  • Where the research is going on without ethical approval. All studies whether prospective or retrospective must have ethical approval.
  • Where there is duplication of an ongoing work is different guise particularly when you are a supervisor of that work.
  • Any form of drug trail or genetic based study without approval of authorized HREC or national Human Research and ethics Committee (NHREC), Abuja.
  • Grant aided or externally funded study going on without ethical approval.
  • Multi-Centre study without ethical approval from local ERC.
  • Deviation from approved methodology without ERC approval.
  • If it was found during oversight function that the research function that the research for which ethical approval was given is not been carried out no justifiable reason.
  • APPLICATION FEES FOR PROTOCOL REVIEW
  1. Undergraduate applicants N1,000:00
  2. Resident doctors and postgraduate applicants below PH.D N5,000:00
  3. Consultants/PH.D and above N7,500:00
  4. Externally funded/Grant-aided research N7,500:00
  5. Expedited review for postgraduate student, resident doctors, and consultant N15,000

NB: Administrative fee for external funded/grant aided research is 10% of the total budget of the research. This fee is exclusive of the application fee.

  • TO MAKE PAYMENT FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW
  1. Payment MUST be made first before proceeding to the form page
  2. Log on to remita.net
  3. Click on Pay FGN and State TSA
  4. Select and click FGN Federal Government of Nigeria
  5. Type University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital on whom do you want to pay
  6. Select UITH GENERAL PURPOSE on Name of Service/Purpose
  7. Fill in the necessary information and make your payment.

  9. After payment is made through the Remita Platform, you can now proceed with your registration by filling the online HERC FORM with the Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) Number generated with the payment made.
  10. Click APPLY NOW below, then it will redirect to the interface where you will be asked to enter a VALID personal E-mail address.
  11. A confirmation link will be sent to the E-mail you provided during the E-mail registration.
  12. Login into your E-mail account by opening a new Tab in the same browser already opened.
  13. Click on the link sent to your E-mail by noreply@uithilorin.
  14. The HERC application form will be made available for you to fill and submit.
  15. After submission wait for 2 seconds as you will be directed to print or download the filled form.
