The University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, in accordance with the circular of Federal Ministry of Health Ref SM/502/S.3T.4/347, accepted the responsibility of Training Community Health Officers for Primary Health Care Services.

The Community Health Officers cadre is the most superior cadre within the Community Health Workers aimed at meeting the health needs of the Nation, particularly in the rural community.  In order that primary health care services  should be made available, accessible and affordable to people in the community 

Historically, this institution is the oldest of all the school owned by University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital,The academic life of the school commenced in March, 1981 at the premises of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.  Intially it operated a one year programme and the certificate obtained on completion was Diploma Community Health.  In 2008, the Community Health Practitioner Registration Board of Nigeria introduced he two year Higher Diploma Programme which the institution, has fully complied with.  However following this new development, the academic calendar of the school changed completely from the one year academic session to four semesters in two years academic progamme.

 The Institution has graduated seven hundred and twenty six Community Health Officers since inception of the school up till 2008 and two hundred and eighty-eight from the date of introduction of the two years Higher Diploma up to 2019 making a total of one thousand and fifty Community Health Officers since inception

SCOPE OD RESPONSIBILITIES:-

The Coordinator controls the overall activities of staff and students while the lecturers are the academic staff of the school and the administrative staff are the non teaching staff that does the administrative duties of the school.

THE SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS ENTRY QUALIFICATION

  • Diploma in Community Health Extension Worker with not less then two years post-qualification experience plus five (5) credit level passes in SSCE (WASCE, NECO or GCE, O-LEVEL) at not more than two sittings, which must include; English  Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
  • Applicant must be registered and possess a valid Practitioner Registration Board of Nigeria (CHPRBN).
